Immediate Release          11/27/2016

The World African Diaspora Union (WADU) sends its deepest condolences to the great people of Cuba during the transition of our Brother Leader Papa Fidel Castro to the Ancestral World. Fidel Castro’s role in the liberation and development of African and other oppressed people is unprecedented in history. His superb revolutionary discipline, dedicated service and committed fighting spirit in defense of the best of and excellence of humanity will remain the highest example of Ubuntu - African Spirituality and worldview.

WADU is especially grateful because it has been directly inspired by his revolutionary work. At the founding of WADU, its top co-founders recognized Fidel Castro as one of Africa’s greatest examples of leadership. Indeed, Baba Elombe Brath, Dr. Ndugu T’Ofori-Atta and Ambassador Dudley Thompson all praised Fidel Castro’s work along with those like The Honorable Marcus Garvey and President Kwame Nkrumah as the highest models for the African people. Both Baba Elombe Brath and Ambassador Baba Dudley Thompson served directly with Fidel Castro during the liberation struggles for African people.

Fidel helped to unleash an unprecedented era of African freedom whereby Dudley “Burning Spear” Thompson of Jamaica, with Fidel and Prime Minister Michael Manley spearheaded the African Diaspora with the support of CARICOM to work with key nations in the OAU to liberate Africa. In the USA, Brath worked closely with the major Pan African related organizations such as AAPRP, TransAfrica, and the American Committee on Africa (ACOA)… to mobilize the Diaspora into liberation support committees, to positively affect U.S. policy on Africa and to direct resources to the frontline states.

In the South, Dr. Atta working with Pan African and progressive ministers such as his friend of the Martin Luther King Fellow, Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, helped in the mass mobilization of those in the faith communities to pressure to U.S. and other global governments to boycott the apartheid system in South Africa.

Africans, this model of “Fidelismo” against colonialism, capitalism and imperialism must continue to be imbued in WADU and all Africans, to advance Africa into the next stage of our liberation for a Union Government.

Family, as our people in Cuba mourn the passing of our great El Commandante Fidel Castro Ruz for nine days, we too must mourn with our powerful people in Cuba. Additionally, liken to the Spiritual tradition of our people in Africa, WADU is urging all to celebrate his life for at least nine days after the State mourning. Further, we are calling for the African Union, African nations and key Pan African organizations across the world to officially recognize Fidel Castro as a hero of African people.

Indeed, Africa and all African people are indebted to the sacrifices of the Cuban people who have given the world Fidel Castro, the Cuban Revolution and the liberation of Africa. In approving the creation of WADU, Baba Ndugu T’Ofori-Atta stated “When Africa calls, its children must respond”. Fidel Castro and the best of African leaders have always responded when Africa calls.
